For the past few months, I’ve been sneaking in a super-boost to our daily smoothie and we now have superpowers. Yes, really! They come in the form of no sick days, increased energy, and better digestion. The best part is, no one noticed a taste change, and the ever-discerning six year old gulps down his veggies without complaint. Here’s how we do it:
Equal Parts Fruit + Veggies
This one has been the biggest shift overall. In every smoothie, I balance the fruit, with the vegetables. If I’m adding one cup of frozen dark cherries, I also add one cup of frozen zucchini spirals. I’ve found that frozen riced cauliflower, frozen zucchini, and frozen spinach blend best. The best part ((aside from the health bonus!)) is that you cannot taste them. I PROMISE.
A few other sneaky superfoods I add in: avocado for a wealth of vitamins + minerals, plus those healthy fats that keep us full longer. I also love adding cashew yogurt for extra protein and creaminess, and once in a while I’ll toss in some tofu for the same benefits (plus an abundance of antioxidants!).
The flavor of the fruit you’re using will always overpower the veggies, but if you really want to make sure (especially with any leafy greens), I would add half a frozen banana.
Clean Protein
Adding protein to your smoothies is not only a good idea, it’s one that helps give you those superpowers we mentioned above:
- Protein in your smoothie helps your body absorb sugar at a slower rate. It helps balance the spike in blood sugar from the fruit, and helps you best absorb all of the nutrients!
- Adding protein keeps you full for longer periods between meals.
- It can aid with weight loss efforts boosting digestion and increasing absorption of vitamins and minerals.
- Protein helps your muscles prevent damage while working out, and recover more quickly after.
Not all powders on the market are created equal, and many of them have harmful additives. We have done a ton of research to hone in on a select few. Here is the clean, vegan protein we are using now and absolutely loving. We also love this one in chocolate. And this option as well!
Boosters
I vary these based on our wellness goals, the time of year (hello, sick season!), and what I feel like our diet has been lacking lately in the nutrient department. I usually only add about 3 boosters at a time, otherwise the result can be a little chalky.
Maca – this is a daily dose for us. Maca has been proven to boost mood and energy, regulate hormones, improve learning and memory, and reduce blood pressure.
Inulin – another daily favorite, and bonus – it’s completely flavorless. Inulin is incredible for aiding digestion, keeping you full longer, controlling blood sugar, and can help repair the gut microbiome!
Amla – this time of year, amla is a must. It has a high concentration of Vitamin C, promotes immunity, improves liver function, and aids heart health.
Superseed Blend – I love this combo of ground flax, chia, and hemp seeds. It’s a beautiful source of your Omega-3’s, protein, and fiber.
Mushroom Blend – The two other humans in my house hate (strong word choice, I know) mushrooms. And they don’t know they’re in there so let’s keep it that way. But here’s why we need them: mushrooms protect brain health, decrease the risk of cancer, stimulate a healthy gut, and boost the immune system!
Moringa – This little lady is a potent powerhouse! Moringa leaves are rich in many important nutrients, including protein, vitamin B6, vitamin C, riboflavin and iron. It also reduces inflammation, lowers cholesterol, and is wildly rich in antioxidants.
Probiotics – did you know 70-80% of our immune system is housed in our gut? Hip hip hooray for probiotics!
Greens Blend – You know all of the reasons to eat more greens. Sneak them in where you can!
Turmeric – My absolute favorite. She’s a little spicy, but I notice a huge difference when I add it in regularly. Glowy skin, lower inflammation, and better digestion just to start!
