Part of the Pack: Barbara Getman on Animal Behavior Advice

By Kaylea

This is the first interview of the series where a photobomb, or do you say videobomb (doesn’t have the same ring to it), takes place. I sure hope it isn’t the last ?. How many cats do you see cameos from before we say goodbye? In any event, it was purrfectly fitting as my guest today is Barbara Getman, Animal Behavior Consultant and owner of My Pet Has Issues. I’ve gone to her for more than 15 years for every piece of advice for our five rescue pups. She also happens to be my mom, and I can’t wait to share her wisdom with you today. Barb has incredible advice for all pet parents; whether you are thinking about adopting, working on teaching a new command, or caring for your geriatric crew:

Meet my mom, Barb.

For as long as I can remember, my mom has been the person everyone goes to for all things pets. Even the stray animals in the neighborhood knew she was the go-to because they always found their way to our house. Sometimes dropped off in a box on the porch. Other times literally seeking solace in our garage. Barb has volunteered with countless organizations over the years to raise funds and resources for homeless animals, and has personally fostered and found forever homes for more than 350 dogs and cats. A little more than a decade ago, Barbara finally followed her calling, and became certified as an Animal Behavior Consultant.

Today on Part of the Pack, she shares several nuggets of advice we can all use to foster better four-legged manners in our home. We also cover how to integrate a new fur baby into the household, and how to handle aging pups with love and compassion. Anyone who is lucky enough to know her will tell you what a big heart she has, especially for animals; giving a voice to the voiceless, and helping fur families come together.

When adopting a pet, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Trainers, behavior consultants, and veterinarians are great resources to help determine, and even help you find, the best fit for your family.

Crazy Cat Lady, (said with love).

Barbara Getman, My Pet Has Issues

In this conversation, we cover mostly dogs, but Barb has a lot of love for cats, too, as you see in the preview above ?. Many of her clients are feline moms and dads, because as she says:

Cats are unique in that they are both predators and prey. This can create unique situations in multi-cat households. My Pet Has Issues can help.

Looks like we may need a Part 2. Comment below with any questions you may have for Barbara, and we’ll make sure we relay them to her! You can also reach out to Barb on Facebook (she shares an abundance of wonderful pet information, animals up for adoption, cute client stories, and resources for all fur families). I encourage you to follow her business page, and if you’re in the CNY area, you can see her website to set up an appointment, here. To find a certified Animal Behavior Consultant in your area, ask your local vet, or search here.

THANK YOU for taking time out of your day to watch, or listen, and to be Part of the Pack with us. We are so grateful to share this cozy corner of the internet with you!

Barb has really helped me with my own dogs that came from neglect cases and ended up in shelters. And she has helped a few other families introduce their newly adopted dogs into their homes… with great success. I recommend talking to Barb with all your questions.
