We’ve had this question quite a few times and it’s hard to answer in a couple of sentences over dm’s; so we thought it fitting to dedicate a blog post with some options for that blank space over your headboard.

We love this fresh (albeit faux) look from Cotton Stem. The hoops are a simple, inexpensive Hobby Lobby find, and easy to update as the seasons change. Grouped together they give off the most romantic and whimsical vibes for your master bedroom. And the best part? It’s an easy DIY even beginners can tackle and replicate!

I’ve had this one pinned for a while. And when it’s pinned on multiple accounts, you know it’s a good one. Depending on your headboard, options above your bed may be limited. Or, you might just be craving simplicity in your zen den. Simple doesn’t have to be boring, though, and an accent wall may be the best bet for you. This board and batten option showcased by Serena and Lily gives off dreamy texture, the lines are soothing, and it creates a focal wall without being the star of the show; serving as an anchor for the rest of the space.

A tall headboard doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t style above it. It’s more about finding art that will help create balance. Notice in this project by Studio McGee, they worked to source a piece that would work aesthetically between the two windows, with the height not going above the sight lines of the trim, and still giving the necessary white space between the two.

Mirror(s) above a bed can be a fantastic option as well. In this case, I love that it is a more minimal look, because with the texture and shape of the headboard, the space above was craving something clean.

And as we see in the twin situation showcased above by Studio McGee, designing with mirrors doesn’t mean you have to leave the space blank in between. I love the scale of the art, and how the coupling with the mirrors makes the two beds not feel as separate, more like they work together as one.

If you’re blessed with tall ceilings and you’re really looking to make a statement, consider going bold with letters. You have many options for this look. The J&K pictured above are reclaimed letters from a vintage warehouse in Chicago that married our love of monogram with the need for a more rustic texture to bring to the room. You can also customize letters from a craft shop, or head to your local salvage yard!
