Have you heard about today? Supposedly, it’s Blue Monday. The most depressing day of the year. It’s no secret that the time between Christmas and spring can be a little challenging, right? It’s cold. We’re still working off those holiday treats. And you can’t play Christmas carols anymore to bring the cheer (though I did catch Jon singing along to Jingle Bells when he was installing tile last week). Feeling blue? That hue is actually celebrated in the #NixonPack residence, in case you haven’t noticed. But if this season has you down, and blue’s not really your jam, we’ve got you covered.
Here are some fresh ideas to get you and your home out of that winter funk:
- Welcoming home an indoor dwarf fruit tree. Amazon prime has an awesome selection! I’ve got my eye on an orange tree and an avocado tree. Pop it in a basket, plop it in the sunshine, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
- Printing your favorite instagram squares and hanging them on an indoor wreath or beaded garland. We change them out every month or two, and right now I’ve got my most beloved family snaps from the summer.
- Aquatic plants. Here’s a new trend you’ll see more of in 2018. These are great for black thumbs, and since they’re already submerged in water, you cannot overwater them and they look cool to boot!
- Browsing Pinterest for some inspo and tackling a DIY. It doesn’t have to be a major renovation, it could be a simple wreath, even a scrumptious cake. The idea behind this is to get your creative juices flowing and have some fun!
- Treat yourself. We all know that small purchases help release serotonin, AKA, the equivalent of taking some happy pills. This could be in the form of fresh flowers, a specialty cake from your favorite bakery, or a piece of art you’ve had your eye on for ages. The key is, make it special. Whenever I buy a bouquet for the house, I like to take some time arranging it, put some jewels in the bottom to add more visual interest, then move it around each room until I find the best spot. The whole process allows for more time to really stop and smell the hydrangeas.
